RESUMEN. En este artículo, se efectúa un análisis de la evolución del empleo regional entre 1980 y 1993, utilizando una versión ampliada del análisis shift-share. Los resultados obtenidos apuntan, por un lado, a la existencia de una relación inversa entre la variación de la productividad y la variación del empleo y, por otro, a que las ganancias de productividad se obtuvieron -sin ninguna relación estable aparente- tanto en función de la composición sectorial del tejido productivo (efecto estructural) como del propio dinamismo regional (efecto diferencial). Asimismo, teniendo en cuenta el nivel de convergencia en la productividad y la relativa semejanza de las estructuras productivas regionales, se estima que será dificil una mayor aproximación en la futura evolución del empleo por comunidades autonómas.
ABSTRACT. Trends in regional employment between 1980 and 1993 are examined in this paper, using an enlarged version of shift-share analysis. The finding signal, first, the existence of an inverse relationship between the change in productivity and the change in employment,and, second, that gains in productivity were made -with no apparent stable relationship- both in terms of the sectoralcomposition of the productive fabric (structural effect) and regional vitality itself (differential effect). Likewise, taking into account the level of convergence in productivity, and the relative similarity of regional productive structures, the paper signals the difficulty of narrowing the differences in the future employment trends of Spain's autonomous communities.
