Shielding of transformer stray fields in trains

In construction of modern trains there are many requirements on the magnetic stray fields from the train’s electrical components. These stray fields should not disturb neither other components in the train or components outside the train. Another important aspect is that the magnetic field exposure to the passengers shall be below required levels.
One component that creates stray field with high magnitudes is the main transformer in the trains. In a recently manufactured Bombardier train, those fields reached unacceptable high values.
In this Thesis a realistic 3D model of the transformer is created, in order to evaluate the effect that different shielding have on the stray fields. The first part is focused on the transformer design, studying different materials that can be used for the magnetic core and the tank. In addition, the thickness of the tank is also studied.
The second part evaluates the effect of different metallic shields on the leakage flux, in order to achieve a solution that reduces the stray field as much as possible using the least amount of shields.
To build up the model and obtain the induction values, a FEM software has been used.
