La actividad pesquera en las Cuatro Villas de la Costa durante la Baja Edad Media

Abstract

RESUMEN: Las villas costeras medievales del Norte Peninsular dependieron de los recursos económicos provenientes del mar. Las principales fuentes de riqueza fueron el comercio y la pesca, que aparecen estrechamente unidos en las cuatro villas estudiadas. Nuestro trabajo concluye que, aunque los marineros tuvieron que arriesgar sus vidas viajando lejos para lograr un equilibrio rentable entre pesca y comercio – desde la costa africana hasta Irlanda –, la mayor parte de las ganancias quedaban en manos de unos pocos.

ABSTRACT: Medieval coastal towns in North Peninsula depended on economic resources from the sea. The main sources of wealth were trade and fisheries, which are closely linked in the four towns which have been studied. Our research concludes that although the sailors had to risk their lives travelling far away to achieve a profitable balance between fishing and trade - from the African coast to Ireland - most of the profits were in the hands of a few of them.
