Insuficiencia renal crónica : su influencia sobre la calidad de vida del paciente

Abstract

La insuficiencia renal crónica es una patología que se considera un importante problema de salud pública. Los síntomas causados por la patología y su tratamiento, afectan negativamente a la calidad de vida de las personas que la padecen. La hemodiálisis es la modalidad de tratamiento más utilizada en España, y la que produce mayores alteraciones en la calidad de vida del paciente. El trasplante renal, por el contrario, constituye el tratamiento que menos altera la calidad de vida del paciente. Por lo general, la calidad de vida relacionada con la salud percibida por las personas con insuficiencia renal crónica se encuentra reducida respecto a la población sana. La adaptación a las nuevas terapias, y a las limitaciones que produce la enfermedad, obligan a los pacientes a modificar su estilo de vida. La educación, llevada a cabo por el personal de enfermería, es una de las herramientas más útiles para reducir la alteración de la calidad de vida. Esta educación se realiza, en parte, durante la consulta de enfermedad renal crónica avanzada (ERCA). Esta educación favorece la toma de decisiones en relación al tratamiento de elección, y refuerza los conocimientos sobre la insuficiencia renal crónica, por parte del paciente y sus familiares. De esta forma, se fomenta el desarrollo de estrategias de afrontamiento frente a la enfermedad, adecuadas al paciente, y se favorece la mejorar la calidad de vida percibida por el mismo.

Chronic kidney or renal failure is a pathology that is considered a major public health problem. The symptoms caused by this disease and its treatment, affect adversely the quality of life of those who suffer from it. In Spain, the hemodialysis treatment is the most widely used although, it produces intense alterations in the quality of life of the patient. The kidney transplant, however, is the treatment that alters least the quality of life of the patient. Usually the quality of life related to the health of people suffering from chronic kidney failure is reduced with respect to the healthy population. The adaptation to the new therapies, and the limitations that the disease itself produces, make the patients modify their lifestyle. Education, carried out by the nursing staff, is one of the most useful tools to reduce the alteration of their quality of life. This education is carried out during the query of advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD). Thus promoting decisions of the patient with respect to the choice of treatment, also it reinforces knowledge on chronic renal failure by the patient and family. Promoting the development of appropriate coping strategies against the disease, therefore, the patient can be helped to improve the perception of his or her quality of life.
