Aníbal y Escipión: Vidas en Paralelo

Abstract

RESUMEN: Aníbal Barca y Publio Cornelio Escipión son dos de los más famosos generales de la antigüedad. Sus proezas y victorias han despertado la fascinación de eruditos y de gente común, más allá de las controversias científicas y valoraciones que se han hecho a lo largo de las épocas. El propósito de este Trabajo de Fin de Grado es analizar de forma crítica las trayectorias vitales de ambos personajes, a través del análisis de las fuentes, haciendo hincapié en las experiencias similares que ambos compartieron a lo largo de sus vidas, hasta alcanzar un final amargo, siendo expulsados de las patrias que tanto se esforzaron por proteger. Para ello hemos utilizado tanto a las fuentes clásicas como la historiografía moderna. La ausencia de testimonios autobiográficos así como de fuentes contemporáneas nos obliga a recurrir a testimonios indirectos, principalmente autores romanos o que vivieron en Roma y se vieron influidos por la mentalidad romana, que no se muestran imparciales en sus juicios hacia ambos personajes. En el caso de Aníbal, fueron tantas las dificultades que éste creó a Roma, que las fuentes trataron de desprestigiarlo frente a su vencedor, Escipión. Los biógrafos modernos, sin embargo, y a pesar de sus gustos personales, optan por aplicar una visión más crítica y realista en sus juicios, reconociendo a ambos como genios militares y grandes personajes históricos. Con todo, no tratamos de realizar una biografía comparada de Aníbal y Escipión: la abundancia e importancia de sus acciones así como la gran cantidad de referencias bibliográficas disponibles no nos lo permitirán aunque lo intentásemos. Sin embargo, podemos perfilar algunas líneas sobre las similitudes y diferencias en las vidas de ambos, tan dispares pero en algunos aspectos tan semejantes. Aunque la vida, personalidad y acciones de dos personas son difícilmente comparables, no cabe duda de que en su educación, gestas bélicas y en las penurias que ambos tuvieron que padecer de sus propios compatriotas, Aníbal y Escipión tuvieron unas existencias paralelas, aunque distintas en cuanto al resultado final.

ABSTRACT: Hannibal Barca and Scipio are two of the greatest generals of antiquity. His feats and victories have aroused the fascination of both scholars and the broadest society sectorst of society, beyond all scientific controversies and general assessments that are made from 2,000 years ago. The purpose of this paper is to analyze critically the life trajectories of both characters, with special emphasis on similar experiences they shared throughout their lives, until it reached its bitter end, being expelled from the mother countries both strove to protect. To do this we have used both classical sources as modern historiography. The absence of autobiographical testimony as well as contemporary sources does not require subsequent use, mainly roman, testimonies that not shown impartial in their judgments to Hannibal. There were so many difficulties created by the carthaginian to Rome that its authors, over the centuries, tried to discredit his enemy namely for many irregularities in order to justify their actions as correct in the conflict. Modern biographers, however, and despite his personal tastes, choose to apply a more critical view and realistic in their judgments about the personalities of our protagonist, recognizing both as military genies and great historical figures. Yet we not try to make a comparative biography of Hannibal and Scipio: the plenty and importance of their actions as well as the large number of bibliographical references will not allow us although we tried. However if we can outline a few lines about the similarities and differences in the lives of our two protagonists, as different but in some ways so similar. It should be understood that we do not think that life, personality and actions of two people are comparable, but there is no doubt that in their education, military feats, and the hardships they both had to suffer from their own countrymen, Hannibal and Scipio had existences with no disparate backgrounds, different in terms of the end result, but similar in its way.
