Religiosidad laica en la España medieval: la reclusión femenina (siglos XIII – XV)

Abstract

RESUMEN Entre los siglos XI y XII y, sobre todo, en el XIII, tuvo lugar en la Europa occidental un aumento de la presencia de los laicos en las prácticas y manifestaciones religiosas en el marco establecido por la jerarquía eclesiástica. Especial atención merecen aquellas mujeres que, no deseando integrarse en el mundo conventual o no disponiendo de medios económicos para hacerlo, optaron por experimentar nuevas formas de espiritualidad y religiosidad materializadas en la reclusión. Presentamos una visión general de los principales movimientos de reclusión laica femenina en la Europa medieval y, más en concreto, en los reinos peninsulares, así como los ideales y prácticas que los fundamentaron. Esta revisión nos ha permitido comprobar la dificultad de establecer claras líneas de separación entre las expresiones de religiosidad laica femenina. Aunque la historiografía no ofrece respuestas concluyentes, pueden apreciarse matices de una religiosidad laica femenina inspirada en los ideales mendicantes.

ABSTRACT Between the eleventh and the twelfth centuries, and especially in the thirteenth century, Western Europe experienced an increase in the presence of lay people in religious practices and manifestations within the framework established by the ecclesiastical hierarchy. Special attention goes to those women who not wishing to or not being able to afford to immerse themselves in the monastic world, chose reclusion to experiment new forms of spirituality and religiosity. This essay is intended to provide an overview of some of the main movements of lay female reclusion in Medieval Western Europe, especially in the Hispanic kingdoms; as well as, the ideals and practices that substantiated them. This overview has allowed us to realise of the difficulty of establishing a clear line between the different expressions of lay female religiosity. Even though historiography has not yet offered conclusive answers, it is possible to see nuances in the lay female religiosity which was inspired by Mendicant ideals.
