Abstract

ABSTRACT Collecting paintings in the Modern Age is a key element when it comes to art and, more specifically, in collecting. Therefore in this study we wanted to refer to one of the most representative pictorial collections of the Spanish Golden Age: that of Felipe IV. Thus it discusses the evolution of the actual collection from Carlos V to reach the vast collection of paintings acquired by Felipe IV during his reign, and trying inheritance, purchases in foreign markets, acquisitions and gifts in court. In addition to the arrangement of the collection in the royal palaces and the criteria used for this. So we wanted to establish the general lines that serve the pictorial taste of Felipe IV: his penchant for painting of the sixteenth century Italian and Flemish painting of the seventeenth century. This taste will be the same taste of the great collectors of this period, those who want to imitate the majestic royal collection. All this shows the impact of the actual collection on society and the art of this period.
