Actividades “mágicas” en la hagiografía cristiana: La Vita Antonii de Atanasio de Alejandría

Abstract

RESUMEN: El presente trabajo consiste en un estudio sobre las prácticas “mágicas” en la hagiografía cristiana, siendo La Vida de Antonio el objeto principal del trabajo. En esta obra Atanasio nos relata la biografía de Antonio, uno de los primeros anacoretas cristianos cuya influencia sobre el movimiento eremítico fue decisiva, por ser el primer testimonio que se nos ha conservado. Debido a su modo de vida ejemplar, dedicada a la oración y a la ascesis, se convierte en un modelo ideal para los cristianos. El objetivo fundamental de este estudio se centra en analizar las actividades milagrosas que Atanasio le atribuye a Antonio, pues gracias a su fe, era capaz de obrar milagros y de combatir al demonio. Se pone de manifiesto que la magia pagana, rechazada por el cristianismo y combatida por figuras como Antonio y otros personajes, cuyas acciones son recogidas por la literatura hagiográfica, en realidad fue adaptada y utilizada por ellos para fines similares. Pese a la condena y penalización de las leyes imperiales contra cualquier manifestación relacionada con la magia, en el mundo cristiano se adoptaron rituales y creencias heredados del paganismo.

ABSTRACT: The subject of this study is about "magical" practices in Christian hagiography, The life of Anthony being the main object of this work. In this work Athanasius recounts us the biography of Anthony, who was one of the first Christian anchorites, whose influence on the eremitical movement was decisive for being the first testimony that has been preserved to us. Due to his exemplary way of living dedicated to prayer and asceticism, he becomes an ideal model for the Christians. The main objective of this study focuses on analyzing miraculous activities that Athanasius attributed to Antonio, thanks to their faith, it was able to work miracles and fight the demon. It is clear that the pagan magic, rejected by Christianity and fought by figures such as Antonio and other characters, whose actions are collected by the hagiographic literature, in reality was adapted and used by them for similar purposes. Despite the condemnation and criminalization of the imperial laws against any demonstration related to the magic, rituals and beliefs inherited from Paganism were adopted in the Christian world.
