Las Matemáticas del Fullereno

Abstract

RESUMEN: Los fullerenos son la tercera forma molecular del carbono. Su descubrimiento a finales del siglo XX supuso un gran avance en el campo de la química, y posteriormente en otros como la nanotecnología y la medicina. Son el objeto de estudio de muchos científicos por su naturaleza, forma y sus características físicas, químicas, matemáticas y estéticas. En este escrito hacemos caracterización de los diferentes tipos de fullerenos y presentaremos un análisis matemático de los más destacados, detallando numerosas propiedades de estas moléculas y su relación con las matemáticas. Hay tres posibles enfoques matemáticos de los fullerenos: desde la geometría, la teoría de grafos y las simetrías. En este trabajo recogemos y analizamos cada uno de ellos.

ABSTRACT: Fullerenes are the third molecular form of carbon. Its discovery in the late twentieth century was a breakthrough in the field of chemistry, and later in others such as nanotechnology and medicine. They are the object of study of many scientists by their nature, shape and physical, chemical, mathematical and aesthetic characteristics. In this paper we characterize the different types of fullerenes and present a mathematical analysis of the most prominent, detailing numerous properties of these molecules and their relationship with mathematics. There are three possible mathematical approaches of fullerenes: from geometry, graph theory and symmetries. In this paper we collect and analyze each of them.
