Los programas del arzobispo Carranza, la acción del Santo Oficio en Toledo y la crítica a la Inquisición (1558-1559)

Abstract

Resumen: El autor estudia los programas que formularon el arzobispo de Toledo Bartolomé de Carranza y el Santo Oficio en el verano de 1558, los respectivos apoyos con que contaron y cómo intentaron desarrollarlos, uno en su archidiócesis, otro a través del tribunal de Toledo. Carranza, cada vez más a la defensiva realizó una intensa labor pastoral e intentó atraerse a las élites eclesiásticas de su arzobispado. La Inquisición, en cambio, con un importante grado de iniciativa obtuvo nuevos privilegios pontificios que permitieron su consolidación y el crecimiento de un aparato todavía débil para las nuevas funciones que pretendía asumir. El apresamiento del arzobispo provocó importantes reacciones y críticas a la Inquisición en el arzobispado visibles en Talavera, un importante núcleo urbano del arzobispado de Toledo.

Abstract: The author studies the programs that made the archbishop of Toledo Bartolomé de Carranza and the Inquisition in the summer of 1558. He analyzes the respective supports they counted as well as the attempts to develop the programs, one in his archdiocese, the other through the court of Toledo. Carranza, defensive, provided intensive pastoral and tried to win over ecclesiastical elites of his archbishopric. The Inquisition, however, with a high degree of initiative, obtained new papal privileges that allowed its consolidation and the growth of a still weak apparatus for the new functions intended to assume. The arrest of the archbishop caused major reactions and criticisms to the Inquisition in the visible archbishopric in Talavera, a major urban center of the archbishopric of Toledo.
