Evolución del sector de transporte terrestre en España y Cantabria (2018-2022)

Abstract

El presente trabajo expone la evolución del sector de transporte terrestre en España y en la comunidad autónoma de Cantabria, analizando su impacto económico y los efectos derivados de la pandemia de COVID-19 durante el periodo comprendido entre los años 2018 y 2022. En cuanto al sector del transporte terrestre, el estudio se centra en el transporte de mercancías, analizando empresas clasificadas bajo los códigos CNAE 492 (Transporte de mercancías por ferrocarril) y 4941 (Transporte de mercancías por carretera). Dentro de este sector, se analizan diversas variables financieras y operativas a las cuales denominamos indicadores, tanto a nivel nacional como regional. Para la realización de estos indicadores, se utilizan datos procedentes de la base de datos Sistema de Análisis de Balances Ibéricos (SABI) y del portal oficial del Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE). El sector del transporte terrestre representa una parte fundamental de la economía, dado que facilita la movilidad de bienes y personas y genera un alto número de empleos. A pesar de los efectos negativos de la pandemia en 2020, el sector mostró una gran capacidad de recuperación, experimentando un crecimiento notable en 2021 y 2022, impulsado por el auge del comercio electrónico y la necesidad de una logística eficiente. Sin embargo, algunos desafíos persisten, como el envejecimiento de la flota de vehículos, la escasez de conductores y la necesidad de modernización de infraestructuras. A nivel financiero, se observa que las empresas del sector han incrementado su nivel de endeudamiento tras la pandemia, aunque han logrado mejorar su rentabilidad y mantener un crecimiento sostenido en sus ingresos. En Cantabria, el sector ha seguido una evolución similar, mostrando una tendencia de crecimiento en facturación y empleo, aunque con ciertas fluctuaciones en sus márgenes de explotación. Por tanto, el análisis destaca la importancia del sector del transporte terrestre como un pilar clave de la economía, tanto a nivel nacional como regional. La resiliencia mostrada por las empresas durante la crisis sanitaria pone de manifiesto la necesidad de seguir invirtiendo en el desarrollo del sector, garantizando su sostenibilidad y eficiencia para afrontar los retos futuros

This study examines the evolution of the land transport sector in Spain and the autonomous community of Cantabria, analyzing its economic impact and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic during the period from 2018 to 2022. Regarding the land transport sector, the study primarily focuses on freight transport, analyzing companies classified under CNAE codes 492 (Freight transport by rail) and 4941 (Freight transport by road). Within this sector, various financial and operational variables, which we call indicators, are examined. For the calculation of these indicators, data from the Iberian Balance Analysis System (SABI) database and the official portal of the National Institute of Statistics (INE) are used. The land transport sector plays a crucial role in the economy, as it facilitates the movement of goods and people and generates a significant number of jobs. Despite the negative effects of the pandemic in 2020, the sector demonstrated strong resilience, experiencing notable growth in 2021 and 2022, driven by the rise of e-commerce and the increasing need for efficient logistics. However, some challenges persist, such as an aging vehicle fleet, a shortage of drivers, and the need for infrastructure modernization. Financially, companies in the sector have increased their debt levels following the pandemic, although they have managed to improve profitability and sustain revenue growth. In Cantabria, the sector has followed a similar trend, showing growth in revenue and employment, albeit with some fluctuations in operating margins. Therefore, the analysis highlights the importance of the land transport sector as a key pillar of the economy, both nationally and regionally. The resilience shown by companies during the health crisis underscores the need for continued investment in the sector’s development, ensuring its sustainability and efficiency to meet future challenges
