Baqueanos y lenguaraces en las fronteras tardocoloniales de la Pampa y la Patagonia

Abstract

El presente artículo estudia dos figuras decisivas en la intermediación cultural desarrollada entre las sociedades fronterizas indígenas e hispanocriollas de Pampa y Patagonia durante la época tardocolonial: los baqueanos y los lenguaraces. Los baqueanos manejaban información geográfica, actuando como guías conocedores de rutas y recursos, mientras que los lenguaraces eran intérpretes diestros en el empleo de idiomas. La historiografía les ha dedicado poca atención por su presencia marginal en las fuentes, pero aquí se ofrece un estudio que contribuye a subsanar esta carencia y subraya su protagonismo en el contexto fronterizo mediante el análisis de sus perfiles sociales y las funciones que ejercieron.

The present paper studies baqueanos and lenguaraces, key figures of cross-cultural intermediation between indigenous and Hispanic-creole frontier societies in Pampa and Patagonia during the late-colonial period. Baqueanos controlled geographical information, acting as guides who knew routes and resources, whereas "lenguaraces" were skillful interpreters at using languages. Historiography has devoted little attention to them because of their marginal presence in sources, but here we offer a study that helps to fill this gap and highlights their prominence in the frontier´s context through the analysis of their social profiles and the roles they practised.
