Ni tan calladas, ni tan quietas: viudas novohispanas en los siglos XVII-XVIII

Abstract

Este trabajo examina el papel de las viudas en el virreinato de Nueva España durante los siglos XVII y XVIII, comparándolas con sus homólogas peninsulares. Tradicionalmente relegadas a un segundo plano en los análisis socio-económicos de la historia de España, las viudas novohispanas han sido consideradas agentes sociales marginales y poco influyentes. Sin embargo, el análisis de fuentes primarias y secundarias revela que, más allá de su rol doméstico, muchas viudas se involucraron en empresas y pleitos jurídicos para defender su patrimonio, imprimiendo su huella en el devenir del virreinato español. El estudio parte de la premisa de que la Corona española intentó implantar en América los valores morales y culturales peninsulares a través de las mujeres emigrantes. Su conducta debía ser ejemplar trasmitiendo con su comportamiento el ideal de mujer hispano. En este trabajo, el objetivo es plantear hasta qué punto las viudas novohispanas respetaron o transgredieron dicho modelo y si existieron diferencias significativas respecto a las viudas peninsulares. Para ello, se analiza el ideal femenino de viuda promovido por tratadistas tanto en la metrópoli como en el virreinato y se contrasta con las trayectorias vitales y los oficios desempeñados por las viudas y su relación con el sistema de castas en la nueva España. La comparación entre ambos contextos permite comprender las similitudes y diferencias en la adaptación o resistencia al modelo social de la viuda hispana en los siglos XVII-XVIII.

This work examines the role of widows in the Viceroyalty of New Spain during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, comparing them to their peninsular counterparts. Traditionally relegated to the background in socio-economic analyses of Spanish history, widows from New Spain have been considered marginal and uninfluential social agents. However, the analysis of primary and secondary sources reveals that, beyond their domestic role, many widows became involved in business ventures and legal disputes to defend their patrimony, leaving their mark on the development of the Spanish viceroyalty. The study is based on the premise that the Spanish Crown attempted to implant peninsular moral and cultural values in America through female emigrants. Their conduct was expected to be exemplary, transmitting through their behavior the ideal of the Hispanic woman. In this work, the objective is to consider to what extent widows from New Spain respected or transgressed this model and whether there were significant differences compared to peninsular widows. To this end, the feminine ideal of widowhood promoted by treatises both in the metropolis and in the viceroyalty is analyzed and contrasted with the life trajectories and occupations of widows, as well as their relationship with the caste system in New Spain. The comparison between both contexts allows for an understanding of the similarities and differences in the adaptation to or resistance against the social model of the Hispanic widow in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
