La colección del I Marqués de Leganés

Abstract

El coleccionismo artístico ha sido históricamente una actividad reservada a las élites, evolucionando a lo largo del tiempo como reflejo de los valores culturales y sociales de cada época. En este estudio se analiza la colección del I marqués de Leganés (1580-1655), una de las más relevantes del siglo XVII en España, tanto por la cantidad de obras reunidas como por la singularidad de sus autores y temáticas. Más allá de su valor cuantitativo, esta colección introduce además un elemento innovador en el coleccionismo de la época: el gusto personal del coleccionista. Se explorará cómo el coleccionismo se convirtió en una manifestación de estatus y erudición en la nueva nobleza del Siglo de Oro y los factores que hacen tan especial al caso del I marqués de Leganés, Diego Mexía Felípez de Guzmán.

Art collecting has historically been an activity reserved for elites, evolving over time as a reflection of the cultural and social values of each era. This study analyzes the collection of the I Marquess of Leganés (1580-1655), one of the most significant of 17th-century Spain, both for the number of works gathered and the uniqueness of its artists and themes. Beyond its quantitative value, this collection also introduces an innovative element in the collecting practices of the time: the collector’s personal taste. This study will explore how art collecting became a manifestation of status and erudition within the new nobility of the Spanish Golden Age, as well as the factors that make the case of the I Marquess of Leganés, “Diego Mexía Felípez de Guzmán”, particularly remarkable.
