Un espejo, una habitación y una profeta: tres metáforas para una perspectiva de género en la enfermería

Abstract

Este trabajo analiza el impacto del género en la profesión enfermera, más concretamente en su autonomía profesional y remuneración con un enfoque interdisciplinar y a través de tres metáforas: Un espejo, una habitación y una profeta. A partir del análisis de los paralelismos de las obras Una habitación propia de Virginia Woolf y Cassandra de Florence Nightingale, se extrapolan las dificultades enfrentadas por las mujeres a lo largo de la historia con las barreras estructurales que todavía constriñen a la profesión enfermera. Adoptar una perspectiva de género permite analizar el impacto que este ha tenido sobre el cuidado y por tanto sobre el reconocimiento profesional y económico de esta profesión, con ayuda de constructos feministas como el techo o la escalera de cristal. Como broche final, se aportan propuestas para el abordaje de estos problemas relacionados con el género desde la educación, la investigación y el activismo político, reivindicando el papel del cuidado y por ello de la enfermería en la transformación social necesaria para progresar en estos aspectos.

This work analyses the impact of gender on the nursing profession and more precisely on its professional autonomy and remuneration, all with an interdisciplinary approach and through the lens of three metaphors: A mirror, a room, and a prophet. Based on the analysis of the parallelism of the pieces A Room of One’s Own by Virginia Woolf and Cassandra by Florence Nightingale, the difficulties of women throughout history are extrapolated to the structural barriers still suffocating the nursing profession. Adopting a gender perspective allows for an analysis of the impact gender has had on care, and therefore on the professional and economic recognition of the profession, with the help of feminist constructs such as the glass ceiling or escalator. As the final touch, a series of proposals are offered to overcome these problems related with gender, through education, research, and political activism, asserting the role of care and therefore of nursing in the social transformation needed to improve in these aspects.
