«Juana Gutiérrez de la Calleja, muger que fue de Françisco de Arse, ya defunto»: un acercamiento a las viudas cántabras en la Baja Edad Media

Abstract

El objetivo de este trabajo reside en realizar un primer acercamiento a las labores socioeconómicas desempeñadas por las viudas del siglo XV en el territorio de la actual Cantabria, España. Más precisamente, en ahondar en aquellos aspectos que rodearon la vida cotidiana de estas mujeres tras el fallecimiento de sus cónyuges y cómo, a pesar del estigma social y la consideración de eterna minoría de edad, se situaron al frente de la unidad familiar con el fin de asegurar el futuro de sus descendientes y el suyo propio, encontrando en la viudez una vía de escape de las restricciones familiares. Para ello, recurriremos a la consulta de varios fondos documentales como el Fondo de la Catedral de Santander (Cantabria, España) o el Archivo de Santa Catalina de Monte Corbán (Cantabria, España), ambos ricos en documentación vinculados a las viudas de la región. / The aim of this work is to make a first approach to the socio-economic tasks carried out by widows in the 15th century in the territory of present-day Cantabria, Spain. More precisely, in delving into those aspects that surrounded the daily life of these women after the death of their spouses and how, despite the social stigma and the consideration of eternal minority, they took charge of the family unit in order to ensure the future of their descendants and their own, finding in widowhood an escape route from family restrictions. To do so, we will consult several documentary collections such as the Santander Cathedral Documentary Collection (Cantabria, Spain) or the Archive of Santa Catalina de Monte Corbán (Cantabria, Spain), both rich in documentation related to the widows of the region.
