El objetivo de este texto es estudiar los personajes femeninos, particularmente las figuras maternas (negativa y positivamente retratadas), que aparecen en la novela corta de José María de Pereda "La mujer del César" (1876). Esta obra -que primero fue publicada en la prensa y después integró un volumen con otros dos relatos bajo el título de "Bocetos al temple"- es un texto escasamente estudiado por la crítica anterior y fue una de las primeras narraciones de cierta extensión del novelista regionalista español de ideología conservadora José María de Pereda. Se intenta demostrar en el artículo cómo la presentación de las imágenes positivas y femeninas de las madres -en particular las pertenecientes a la clase aristocrática- es esencial en el planteamiento moral de la novela de tesis religiosa cultivada, entre otros, por Pereda.
The aim of this paper is to study the female characters, particularly the maternal figures (portrayed negatively and positively) that appear in José María de Pereda's short novel ?La mujer del César? (1876). This work, which was first published in the press and later integrated a volume with two other stories under the title of Bocetos al temple, is a text scarcely studied by previous critics and was one of the first stories of a certain length written by the Spanish novelist of conservative ideology José María de Pereda. The article attempts to demonstrate how the presentation of positive and feminine images of mothers, particularly those belonging to the aristocratic class, is essential in the moral approach of the novel of religious thesis cultivated by Pereda, among others.
