Resumen/Abstract
One of the optical characteristics that best represent the suitability of an optical fibre is efficiency. Recent experimental work carried out in British Telecom Laboratories (BTL) has provided evidence that relative efficiency is a function of the length of the fibre for excited conditions. The efficiency increases with the length, reaching a maximum and from this region, the efficiency decreases with the length of the fibre. An absolute maximum efficiency was achieved between points of the fibre that can fitted with 45 to 55 dB of absorption at 1530 nm, for a launched input signal power of about 1.2 mW. So, in order to obtain a representative parameter of the yield of pump power conversion into signal power, the efficiency may be measured between the above mentioned points.
