Poder, prestigio y propaganda: los cántabros de Cuba y la revista La Montaña

Abstract

Los cántabros emigrados a Cuba se convirtieron entre finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX en una de las principales comunidades españolas de la isla. Acorde a su poder, decidieron crear una revista que mostrase su destacada posición social y, al mismo tiempo, difundiese las noticias de su tierra de origen. Fruto de ese proceso surgió La Montaña, editada en La Habana entre 1915 y 1954. La revista permitió a los montañeses de Cuba ejercer una gran influencia en la Provincia de Santander, y su carácter cubano la convirtió en una excepción. En este trabajo se analiza el devenir de La Montaña junto a las principales personalidades que la dirigieron o colaboraron en ella, así como se destaca su carácter propagandístico y la ideología conservadora que acompañó su línea editorial. Con ello se pretende sentar una base para futuras investigaciones que permitan profundizar en la historia de la publicación y en el estudio de su impacto.

The Cantabrians who emigrated to Cuba between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century became one of the main communities among the Spaniards on the island. In accordance with their power, they decided to create a magazine that would showcase their prominent social position and, at the same time, spread the news from their homeland. The result of this process was "La Montaña", published in Havana between 1915 and 1954. The magazine allowed the "montañeses" to exert a great influence in the Province of Santander, and its Cuban character made it an exception. This paper analyses the development of "La Montaña" together with the main personalities who directed it or collaborated in it, as well as highlighting its propagandistic nature and the conservative ideology that accompanied its editorial line. The aim is to lay the foundations for future research that will allow us to delve deeper into the history of the publication and the study of its impact.
