Prácticas científicas en el Volcán de Colima durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX y principios del XX

Abstract

El objetivo del presente artículo, enmarcado en la Historia Cultural de la Ciencia, es efectuar una reflexión acerca de las prácticas que incidieron en la construcción del Volcán de Colima como objeto de estudio, en su percepción como un sujeto en acción para la modificación del paisaje de la región, y en su incorporación al conocimiento sistemático de la superficie del globo durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX y principios del XX. Las fuentes, provenientes de acervos físicos y digitalizados, contempla un doble conocimiento local: el in situ generado por los visitantes foráneos y el de los sabios locales que habitaban la región. A través del análisis de las ascensiones, la observación del cielo y del cráter del volcán, la representación gráfica y la circulación del saber por medios impresos, se piensa la manera como la generación local del conocimiento se posiciona frente a lo nacional y lo global en el proceso de profesionalización de la vulcanología.

The objective of this article, framed in the Cultural History of Science, is to make a reflection about the practices that influenced the construction of the Colima Volcano as an object of study, in its perception as a subject in action for the modification of the landscape of the region, and in its incorporation to the systematic knowledge of the surface of the globe during the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. The sources, coming from physical and digitized archives, contemplate a double local knowledge: the in situ knowledge generated by foreign visitors and that of the local scientists who inhabited the region. Through the analysis of the climbs, the observation of the sky and the crater of the volcano, the graphic representation and the circulation of knowledge through printed media, a reflection is made on the way in which local generation of knowledge is positioned in the process of professionalization of volcanology.
