Caminos de ida y vuelta: el rol de América en la misión católica en China

Abstract

Este trabajo analiza el viaje que realizaron un grupo de franciscanos descalzos españoles desde Europa hasta China en 1669, con especial atención a su paso por Nueva España. El artículo se plantea como objetivo entender el lugar que ocupó América dentro de la gestión de las misiones en China. En este sentido, dos fueron las cuestiones clave que definieron la estancia de los misioneros en tierras americanas: por un lado, las enfermedades que padecieron como consecuencia de las largas travesías que tenían que enfrentar; y, por otro lado, la necesidad de gestionar y negociar su sustento y manutención no sólo durante el propio viaje en América, sino también en su destino final, China. A través del estudio de narraciones inéditas de los frailes mendicantes conservadas en el Archivo Ibero Oriental de Madrid y en el Archivo General de Indias en Sevilla, este artículo demuestra cómo los acontecimientos que tuvieron lugar en este territorio condicionaron la empresa misionera posterior en China.

This paper analyses the journey made by a group of Spanish Discalced Franciscans from Europe to China in 1669, with special attention to their stay in the viceroyalty of New Spain. The article aims to understand the importance of America in the establishment of the missions in China. There were two key issues that defined the stay of the missionaries in America. Firstly, the diseases they suffered because of the long journeys they had to face; and, secondly, the need to manage and negotiate their sustenance and maintenance not only during the journey in America, but also in their final destination, China. Through the study of unpublished descriptions of the Mendicant friars preserved in the Ibero Oriental Archive of Madrid and in the General Archive of the Indies om Seville, this article shows how the events that took place in this territory conditioned the missionary enterprise in China in the next decades.
