Estudio teórico y práctico sobre la ansiedad matemática

Abstract

La ansiedad matemática es un sentimiento de angustia y tensión que aparece en procesos de manipulación matemática, y ante la anticipación de estos. Actualmente, se considera un trastorno de ansiedad en sí mismo, y se manifiesta desde los primeros años de edad hasta entrada la etapa adulta. Se sabe, además, que afecta más a mujeres que a hombres. Se asocia negativamente con el rendimiento matemático, pero también tiene un papel determinante en otras facetas del individuo, como en la elección del itinerario académico, que será fundamental a lo largo de su vida. Este trabajo comienza haciendo un repaso de las características comunes de los trastornos de ansiedad, para después estudiar la ansiedad matemática, su prevalencia, las consecuencias que tiene y cómo se puede tratar. Finalmente, se utiliza un cuestionario para medir la ansiedad matemática en el alumnado de un instituto de Cantabria.

Mathematical anxiety is a feeling of anguish and tension that appears in processes of mathematical manipulation, and in anticipation of these. Nowadays, it is regarded as an anxiety disorder, and it appears from early ages into adulthood. It is known to affect women more than men. It is negatively associated with mathematical performance, but it also has a determining role in other facets of the individual, such as the choice of career, which will play a fundamental role throughout their life. This paper begins by reviewing the common characteristics of anxiety disorders to then focus on mathematical anxiety, its prevalence, consequences and how it can be treated. Finally, a questionnaire will be used to measure mathematical anxiety in students of a high school in Cantabria.
