Análisis de los Indicios Metalúrgicos de la Cueva de Arangas (Cabrales, Asturias)

Abstract

El yacimiento de la Cueva de Arangas presenta en su registro arqueológico un hallazgo de suma importancia para el conocimiento de la metalurgia prehistorica en la región cantábrica. Por ello, es necesaria una actualización y revisión de la documentación arqueológica además de un nuevo estudio de los restos. Sobre este primer objetivo, la investigación prosiguió en dos temas principales: la búsqueda del origen del mineral de cobre procesado en el yacimiento y la caracterización y comparación de las estructuras de combustión en relación con las actividades metalúrgicas. Este trabajo nos ha permitido conocer nuevos datos a través del estudio químico-elemental de los restos metalúrgicos, así como del análisis morfológico y contextual de las estructuras de combustión presuntamente utilizadas para actividades metalúrgicas. Los resultados son prometedores y ofrecen una nueva visión sobre los distintos focos mineros de la cornisa cantábrica a inicios de la Edad del Bronce. Por su parte, las estructuras de combustión presentan importantes indicios para relacionarlas con la metalurgia, como es el alto grado de calcinación de restos y estratos inferiores que presuponen una morfología compleja y sofisticada que no ha llegado completa hasta nuestros días. El estado de la investigación es aún preliminar pero estos datos introducen interesantes ideas, que nos hablan de la importancia del desarrollo de la metalurgia y su tecnología en entornos mineros de primera instancia durante la Prehistoria, como es en este caso el sector centro-oriental de Asturias.

The site of the Cueva de Arangas presents in its archaeological record a finding of great importance for the knowledge of prehistoric metallurgy in the Cantabrian region. Therefore, it is necessary to update and revise the archaeological documentation as well as a new study of the remains. On this first objective, the research continued on two main topics: the search for the origin of the copper ore processed at the site and the characterization and comparison of the combustion structures in relation to the metallurgical activities. This work has provided us with new data through the chemical-elemental study of the metallurgical remains, as well as the morphological and contextual analysis of the combustion structures presumably used for metallurgical activities. The results are promising and offer a new vision on the different mining centers of the Cantabrian coast at the beginning of the Bronze Age. On the other hand, the combustion structures present important indications to relate them to metallurgy, such as the high degree of calcination of remains and lower strata that presuppose a complex and sophisticated morphology that has not arrived complete to our days. The state of research is still preliminary but these data introduce interesting ideas, which speak to us of the importance of the development of metallurgy and its technology in mining environments of first instance during the Prehistoric period, as is in this case the central-eastern sector of Asturias.
