La quiebra del orden portugués y la anexión a la monarquía hispánica (1578-1581)

Abstract

La anexión de Portugal a la Monarquía Hispánica fue fruto de una serie de características estructurales previas, una desarrollada acción diplomática y un rotundo éxito militar. En el periodo que abarca desde el desastre de Alcazarquivir hasta las Cortes de Tomar, las estructuras sociales del reino luso se encontraban en un estado de ruptura y reformación, suponiendo un factor indispensable para las maniobras de Felipe II. A través del análisis de cada uno de los colectivos sociales, se podrá observar cómo la anexión de Portugal a la Monarquía Hispánica supondría el culmen de un periodo de inestabilidad y crisis que había comenzado con el reinado de Sebastião I.

The annexation of Portugal to the Hispanic Monarchy was the result of a series of previous structural characteristics, a developed diplomatic action and a resounding military success. In the period from the disaster of Alcazarquivir to the Cortes of Tomar, the social structures of the Portuguese kingdom were in a state of rupture and reform, constituting an indispensable factor for the maneuvers of Philip II. Through the individualized analysis of each of the social groups: Church (high and low clergy), cities (first and second bench), nobility (fidalguia and attorneys) and the non-privileged. It can be seen how the annexation of Portugal to the Hispanic Monarchy would mark the culmination of a period of instability, pestilence and crisis that had begun with the reign of Sebastião I.
