El sistema oficial de comunicaciones y transporte en el imperio romano: La vehiculatio o cursus publicus de Augusto a Diocleciano

Abstract

La vehiculatio o cursus publicus era el sistema oficial de comunicaciones y transporte del Estado romano. Si bien algunos de sus aspectos se encuentran ya durante la República, su implantación definitiva tuvo lugar en el Principado de Augusto. El sistema se extendió durante el Alto imperio y terminó por degradarse en la Antigüedad Tardía. A lo largo de este trabajo se analizan las bases de su organización y funcionamiento, incluyendo la gestión, financiación y recursos, tanto terrestres como marinos. El estudio comprende la situación de las vías, las estaciones de servicio y los medios de transporte, así como una síntesis de las fuentes disponibles, sin olvidar todo aquello relacionado con las irregularidades y prácticas fraudulentas.

The vehiculatio or cursus publicus was the official communication and transportation system of the Roman State. Although some of its aspects were already present during the Republic, its definitive implementation took place during the Principate of Augustus. The system expanded during the Early Empire and eventually degraded in Late Antiquity. Throughout this work the basis of its organization and operation are analysed, including management, financing, and resources, both terrestrial and maritime. The study encompasses the condition of the roads, service stations, and means of transportation, as well as a synthesis of the available sources, not forgetting everything related to irregularities and fraudulent practices.
