El desarrollo de la identidad hui en la China del siglo XX

Abstract

Esta investigación doctoral examina la formación de la etnia hui en China, desafiando las narrativas consolidadas sobre su etnogénesis. En ella se destaca cómo diversos elementos culturales, no solo arabo-persas y han, sino también centroasiáticos, han confluido en la estructuración de una identidad etnocultural compleja. A lo largo del siglo XX, los sinomusulmanes tuvieron que readaptar el islam a las nuevas circunstancias políticas, a menudo necesitando modificar la exégesis oficial para evitar contradicciones con la narrativa estatal. Sin embargo, pese a los esfuerzos realizados por la intelligentsia, la fragmentación de las comunidades hui ha generado conflictos tanto interétnicos como intraétnicos. A menudo, la represión de las autoridades chinas ha llevado a una relación tensa. Llamadas a suavizar este agravio y desafiando el desprecio xenófobo hacia el islam, la intelectualidad hui ha logrado fomentar una cierta armonía con la sociedad mayoritariamente han mediante un proceso de negociación constante.

This doctoral research examines in depth the formation of the Hui ethnicity in China, challenging a series of consolidated narratives about its ethnogenesis. It highlights how various cultural elements, not only Arabo-Persian and Han but also Central Asian, have converged in structuring a complex ethnocultural identity. Throughout the 20th century, Sino-Muslims had to readjust Islam to new political circumstances, often needing to modify the official exegesis to avoid contradictions with the state narrative. However, despite the efforts carried out by the intelligentsia, the fragmentation of identities has generated both interethnic and intraethnic conflicts. Moreover, the repression by Chinese authorities has led to a frequently tense relationship. Trying to ease the tension and challenging the xenophobic disdain towards Islam, the Hui intelligentsia has managed to foster harmony with the predominantly Han society through constant negotiation.
