Ciudadanía y sevirato augustal: el ejemplo de

Abstract

El sevirato augustal fue una institución urbana de carácter semioficial, propia de coloniae y municipia. Esta peculiaridad permitió que libertos enriquecidos accedieran a ella como vía de promoción social, ya que su situación jurídica les impedía ejercer cualquier cargo oficial. Por ello, el sevirato augustal se nos presenta como un factor clave para estudiar la movilidad social en el Alto Imperio romano. El presente estudio se centra en el caso de Aquae Sextiae, sin afán totalizador pero con ánimo de determinar los rasgos propios de la institución en esta colonia romana, y reflexionar sobre varias cuestiones abiertas sobre el sevirato augustal en las que es preciso profundizar, como el carácter sinónimo o no de sus distintas denominaciones -sevir, sevir Augustalis, Augustalis-, la presencia exclusiva o mayoritaria de libertos en el cargo, o las variantes epigráficas para referirse al término "sevir" -sevir, sexvir, VIvir, IIIIIIvir-.

The Augustal sevirate was an urban institution of semi-official nature, typical in the coloniae and municipia. This special feature allowed freedmen to access to that position, considering that their juridical status forbade them to practice any official post. That's why the Augustal sevirate is a key factor to study social mobility in the Early Roman Empire. This article is focused in the example of Aquae Sextiae, without any pretension to study the whole matter, but with willingness to determinate particular aspects of the institution in question in this Roman colony and to think about different unresolved issues about the Augustal sevirate, issues in which it seems necessary to develop further investigations, such as the synonymous or not synonymous nature of the different specific names of the Augustal sevirate -sevir, sevir Augustalis, Augustalis-, the unique or majority presence of freedmen in this post, or the epigraphic variations to refer the term "sevir" -sevir, sexvir, VIvir, IIIIIIvir-.
