René Cassin, el jurista de los derechos humanos

Abstract

René Samuel Cassin (1887-1976) fue uno de los juristas europeos más destacados del siglo xx. Su dedicación al Derecho no se plasmó en la construcción de sistema teórico alguno sino en múltiples actividades de muy diversa naturaleza, entre ellas, profesor de Derecho civil, representante de Francia en la Sociedad de las Naciones, jurista al servicio de la Francia Libre encabezada por el General Charles de Gaulle, vicepresidente del Conseil d`État y miembro del Conseil Constitutionnel. Sin perjuicio del reconocimiento que merecen sus aportaciones en las anteriores facetas, es recordado fundamentalmente por su capital contribución a la redacción de la Declaración Universal de Derechos Humanos proclamada por la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas el 10 de diciembre de 1948 –en cuyo procedimiento de elaboración participó desde los primeros momentos– y por haber sido juez y presidente del Tribunal Europeo de Derechos Humanos en los años iniciales de funcionamiento del órgano jurisdiccional. En razón de ello, su nombre esta indisolublemente vinculado al reconocimiento y protección internacionales de los derechos humanos, a los que dedicó su pensamiento y su acción.

René Samuel Cassin (1887-1976) was one of the leading european jurists of the 20th century. His dedication to the law was reflected not in the construction of any theoretical system but in many activities of a very diverse nature, including a professor of civil law, a representative of France in the League of Nations, jurist in the service of Free France headed by General Charles de Gaulle, Vice-President of the Conseil d’État and member of the Conseil Constitutionnel. Without prejudice to the recognition that their contributions deserve in the previous facets, is remembered primarily for its vital contribution to the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly on 10 December 1948 – in whose drafting procedure it participated from the outset–, and for have been judge and president of the European Court of Human Rights in the initial years of operation of the Court. As a result, its name is inextricably linked to the international recognition and protection of human rights, to which he devoted his thought and action.
