José María de Pereda y De tal palo tal astilla como novela de tesis

Abstract

José María de Pereda es un novelista reconocido por su participación en movimiento literario realista de finales del siglo XIX. Fue autor de prensa, relatos y novelas; entre estas últimas encontramos sus novelas de tesis, que ilustraban a través de la ficción un juicio personal acerca de la sociedad, la política o la religión. En esta investigación nos centraremos en De tal palo tal astilla como ejemplo más representativo de su interés por transmitir mediante una novela su ideología ultraconservadora, en este caso en lo que concierne a la religión. En la obra, el autor defiende la importancia del catolicismo. Además, a través de una voz narrativa que se identifica con el propio Pereda y con sus personajes, ejemplifica las consecuencias negativas que encuentra en el ateísmo. Para lograr nuestro objetivo, plantearemos un marco teórico que permitirá entender los fundamentos de su producción literaria en general y de sus novelas de tesis en particular; en siguiente lugar, analizaremos la obra de acuerdo con su naturaleza como novela de tesis. Todo ello nos permitirá reconocer lo que distingue el texto entre el resto de publicaciones del autor, así como respecto a las de otros escritores.

José María de Pereda is a novelist known for taking part in the literary realist mouvement during the end of the XIX century. Apart from writing for the press, he was an author of short stories and novels; among these novels, we find his thesis novels, that allowed him to share his personal thoughts about society, politics and religion through fiction. In this study we will focus on De tal palo tal astilla as an example of a piece of work that served the purpose of making public his ultraconservative ideology regarding religion. In it, he supports catholicism and explains the negative consequences of atheism through the characters and the narrative voice, which we can identify as his own. In order to achieve our goal, we will propose a theoric frame through which we wil discuss all his literary work while focusing on his thesis novels. Having done this, we will analyze the novel cited above as a thesis novel. In sum, all this will make possible distinguishing the book among the rest of the literary work of the author, as well as among the novels of other writers of his time.
