La minería en el Valle de Camargo (1840-1936). Un caso de patrimonio industrial en el suroeste de la bahía de Santander

Abstract

A principios de 1840 se abrió una nueva etapa en la historia del Valle de Camargo con el descubrimiento de las primeras minas de hierro y el comienzo de su explotación, con mayor incidencia en las siguientes décadas, articulando una nueva área industrial en el suroeste de la bahía de Santander. La formación de los grandes espacios mineros en el municipio a mediados de siglo determinó las principales zonas que continuarían explotándose durante los siguientes años. A partir de 1860 la minería en Camargo se consolidaría con la instalación de varias compañías tanto provinciales como de origen extranjero. Sin embargo, después de una “edad dorada” este sector sería objeto de las vicisitudes económicas y políticas representadas por tres fenómenos: la Primera Guerra Mundial, el crack del 29, y la Guerra Civil de 1936. La consecución de estos tres acontecimientos pondría fin a la época iniciada más de medio siglo atrás. Este trabajo pretende abordar el objeto de estudio desde tres perspectivas: la histórica, la económica y la patrimonial (material y territorial). Respecto esta última, se intentará aportar la mayor información disponible sobre las infraestructuras y los medios de producción a partir del contenido que se recoja en las fuentes bibliográficas y documentales. Asimismo, se realizará un catálogo de los vestigios existentes a través de su examen, concluyendo con algunas propuestas que busquen fomentar la preservación y conocimiento de los mismos.

At the beginning of 1840, a new stage in the history of the Camargo Valley began with the discovery of the first iron ore mines and the start of their exploitation, with greater incidence in the following decades, articulating an industrial area in the southwest of the bay of Santander. The formation of the large mining areas in the council in the middle of the century determined the main areas that continue to be exploited during the following years. From 1860 onwards, mining in Camargo was consolidated whith the set up of several companies, both from the province and abroad. However, after a “golden age” mining would be affected due to three phenomena: First World War, the crash of 1929, and the Civil War of 1936. The achievement of these three events would bring to an end the era that had begun more than half a century earlier.. This work aims to approach the object of study from three perspectives: the historical, the economic and the patrimonial (material and territorial). With regard to the latter, an attemp will be made to provide as much information as posible on the infrastructures and means of production based on the content of bibliographical and documentary sources. In addition, a catalogue of the existing remains will be made through their examination, concluding some proposals tha seek to promote their preservation and knowledge.
