El culto a Serapis en la Hispania romana: puesta en valor de algunas evidencias arqueológicas

Abstract

La veneración del dios Serapis se introdujo en Hispania al igual que sucedió con otras deidades nilóticas tras incorporarse el espacio peninsular al ámbito político, socioeconómico y cultural del Imperio romano. Se trataba de una divinidad sincrética en la que se conjugaban diferentes horizontes religiosos que evolucionaron con el tiempo para que fueran fácilmente asumibles por la sociedad del momento. Las muestras de devoción cristalizaron en evidencias materiales que merecen ser estudiadas para poder contextualizar a esta deidad. El objetivo principal de este trabajo es, por tanto, reconstruir el culto a Serapis en Hispania a través del análisis de las fuentes arqueológicas, epigráficas y documentales de las que se disponen en la actualidad. La finalidad reside en comprender los motivos de su veneración y el alcance del influjo que llegó a tener en la Península. Paralelamente se analizará alguno de los casos de puesta en valor del patrimonio legado como consecuencia de la pervivencia cultural heredada.

The veneration of the god Serapis was introduced in Hispania, as happened with other Nilotic deities after the peninsular space was incorporated into the political, socio-economic, and cultural sphere of the Roman Empire. It was a syncretic divinity that combined different religious horizons that evolved so that they could be easily accepted by the society of the time. The signs of devotion crystallized in material evidences that deserve to be studied in order to contextualize this deity. The main aim of this work is therefore to reconstruct the cult of Serapis in Hispania by analysing the archaeological, epigraphic, and documentary sources currently available. The purpose lies in understanding the reasons for their veneration and the extent of the influence he came to have on the Peninsula. At the same time, some of the cases of the enhancement of the heritage bequeathed as a consequence of the inherited cultural survival will be analysed.
