Contexto socio-cultural en torno a la primera circunnavegación a la Tierra

Abstract

Recientemente (2022) se celebró el 500 aniversario de la primera circunnavegación a la Tierra. Han sido muchas las publicaciones científicas que han recordado una de las efemérides más importantes de la Historia de la Humanidad, aunque la mayoría de ellas han hecho y hacen énfasis en los dos grandes protagonistas de este viaje, Hernando de Magallanes y Juan Sebastián del Cano, así como los distintos avatares que ocurrieron en estos más de tres años. Más allá de sus protagonistas, quedan todavía muchos aspectos del viaje sobre los cuales reflexionar, superando el enfoque evenemencial de la historiografía tradicional, sobre todo desde el punto de vista de la Historia Cultural. Este es uno de los objetivos capitales del presente trabajo: conocer el contexto sociocultural de la expedición y de algunos lugares a los que llegaron. Así, interesa saber qué tipo de barcos llevaron, quiénes eran los tripulantes, su condición social, su procedencia, qué lenguas hablaban antes de embarcar y qué lengua se hablaba en la cubierta de las naos, su estado civil, su nivel cultural y las dificultades o no que tuvieron para cobrar su salario tanto ellos como sus madres y viudas, entre otras cuestiones.

Recently (2022) it was the 500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the Earth. There have been plenty scientific publications, that have recalled one of the most important events in the History of Humanity although most of them have done and do emphasize the two main protagonists of this voyage, Hernando de Magallanes and Juan Sebastián del Cano, and the different adversities that occurred in these more than three years. Beyond its protagonists, there are still many aspects of the trip to reflect on, going beyond the even-needed approach of traditional historiography, especially from the point of view of Cultural History. This paper tries to recognize and highlight who the crew members were, what places they arrived, what type of ships, their social status, where they came from, what languages they spoke before embarking in this trip and what language was spoken on the deck of the ships. I will figure out their marital status, their cultural level, the kind of difficulties they and their mothers and widows had to deal with in order to collect their salaries.
