Cuidados paliativos en oncología pediátrica: Revisión bibliográfica

Abstract

El cáncer infantil es una de las principales causas de mortalidad en los niños y adolescentes. Esta enfermedad produce un impacto emocional y social en los niño/as, su entorno familiar y en todos los aspectos de sus vidas (absentismo escolar, preocupación por ingresos económicos, temor, ansiedad). Hay ocasiones en las que no se puede modificar el trascurso de la enfermedad y el fin es aliviar el sufrimiento de los niño/as. Los cuidados paliativos pediátricos (CPP) son un tipo de cuidados que buscan mejorar la calidad de vida de los niños y sus familiares. Una parte fundamental de este tipo de cuidados es el control de los síntomas tales como el dolor y la disnea, para mejorar el bienestar y confort de los pacientes. Los profesionales de enfermería en CPP constituyen un papel fundamental para realizar dichos cuidados y educar a los padres/cuidadores acerca del manejo de las necesidades y síntomas que causen mayor malestar en el niño/a. De la misma forma, proporcionan un apoyo importante al paciente y a su entorno más próximo, puesto que este tipo de circunstancias afecta a nivel psicológico y emocional
