Abstract

El envejecimiento de la población y la prevalencia de las patologías crónicas son dos temas en auge en la actualidad. Cada vez son más las personas que llegan al final de su vida padeciendo una enfermedad terminal, por lo que es preciso cerciorarse de que las personas encargadas de poner en prácticas los cuidados al final de la vida en los ancianos están adecuadamente capacitadas para impartirlos. Han de saber que el paciente está constituido por diferentes esferas, y deben saber valorarlas y abordarlas como merecen. Lo mismo ocurre con los familiares, que son un pilar fundamental para el enfermo terminal, y precisan ser atendidos, cuidados y ayudados durante esta nueva etapa de vida a la que se enfrentan. Es importante tener presente que la inversión en formación para los profesionales sanitarios, la creación de entornos especializados para la impartición de cuidados paliativos, y el aporte de los recursos clínicos necesarios, supondría una mejora en la sociedad actual en la que vivimos, cada vez más envejecida y vulnerable

The number of people that get to the end of their lives suffering a terminal disease is becoming higher and higher, and due to that circumstance, it is necessary to make sure that people in charge of taking responsibility for the end-of-life care on elderly people are properly qualified to help them. They must know that the patient is comprised of different spheres, and how to assess and address them as they deserve. The same applies to the family, they are an essential backbone for the terminally ill patient, so they require to be attended to, looked after, and helped during this new stage of life that they are dealing with. It is important to keep in mind that the investment in training for healthcare professionals, the creation of specialized environments where palliative care can take place, and the provision of the necessary clinical resources, will entail an improvement in the increasingly aged and vulnerable current society that we live in
