Usos y abusos de la jurisdicción inquisitorial: las brujas de los Basurto

Abstract

RESUMEN: Este artículo se plantea en torno al problema historiográfico del uso social de la justicia aplicado a la jurisdicción inquisitorial. Un caso que inicialmente se presenta como una serie más de delaciones referentes a hechicería y brujería remitidas a la Inquisición de Logroño desde Bilbao entre finales del siglo XVII y principios del XVIII, nos permite analizar cómo la sociedad contempló y usó la jurisdicción inquisitorial como un espacio más de obtención de beneficios de carácter particular, así como cuál fue la posición de la institución inquisitorial frente a ello.

ABSTRACT: This article deals with the social use of the inquisitorial jurisdiction. The analysis of a series of accusations concerning witchcraft and sorcery coming from the villa of Bilbao in the late 17th and early 18th century, let us analyze how society considered and used the inquisitorial jurisdiction as another way at its disposal for obtaining personal benefits, as well as to determine what the position of the inquisitorial institution was under those circumstances.
