La eugenesia en Gran Bretaña durante la primera mitad del siglo XX

Abstract

RESUMEN La historia de la práctica de la eugenesia, que en términos generales consiste en el estudio y la implementación de las leyes biológicas de la herencia orientados a la mejora de la especie humana, ha supuesto una de las cuestiones más polémicas de la Historia Contemporánea. Si bien acabó siendo desacreditada tras los horrores de la II Guerra Mundial, durante las primeras décadas del siglo XX sus ideas gozaron de una gran popularidad entre las elites científicas, políticas y sociales en la gran mayoría de los países occidentales. Este trabajo se centrará en el caso de Gran Bretaña, cuna de la eugenesia moderna, así como en sus protagonistas e ideas que moldearon dicho movimiento y como llegaron a tratar de impulsar e implementar sus aspiraciones eugenésicas en la sociedad británica durante la primera mitad del S. XX.

ABSTRACT The history of the practice of eugenics, which in general terms consists in the study and implementation of the biological laws of heredity aimed at improving the human race, has been one of the most controversial issues of the Contemporary History. Although it ended up being discredited after the horrors of World War II, during the first decades of the 20th century its ideas enjoyed great popularity among the scientific, political and social elites in the vast majority of Western countries. This dissertation will focus on the case of Great Britain, the cradle of modern eugenics, as well as the characters and ideas that shaped this movement and how they came to try to promote and implement their eugenics aspirations within the british society during the first half of the XX century.
