Abstract

RESUMEN En el presente trabajo se analiza la Verdadera destreza española contenida en el tratado de D. Francisco Lorenz de Rada y Arenzana, maestro de esgrima que desarrolló su actividad entre los siglos XVII y XVIII, así como sus significaciones dentro de su contexto y las repercusiones e impactos que supuso esta obra. La Verdadera Destreza se erige como un estilo de esgrima que abarca mucho más que la mera defensa personal. Abrazaba el arte y disciplina de la esgrima, por este medio, un conjunto de valores y características, que recibieron la impronta del desarrollo de una ciencia más empírica y del avance de las matemáticas, especialmente la geometría, que la permitirán distinguirse como una suerte propia de la nobleza, con atribuciones sociales y con unos rasgos civilizadores de la violencia que pueden ser leídos con el filtro de las teorías de la moderna sociología y arraigo en los estudios de Norbert Elias sobre el proceso de civilización que impulsó valores y transformaciones profundamente renovadoras en la sociedad occidental de los Tiempos Modernos.

ABSTRACT This paper analyzes the Verdadera Destreza treat, the proposal given by D. Francisco Lorenz de Rada y Arenzana, fencing master who developed his activity between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It pays attention to this proposal meanings within its historical context and its repercussions and impacts and utility for the society of the early Modern Age. The Verdadera destreza stands as a style of fencing that encompasses much more than mere self-defense. It embraced, the art and discipline of fencing, by this means, a set of values and characteristics, which received the imprint of the empirical sciences development as well as of mathematics, especially geometry. These features were strengthening the projection of this proposal to specific social groups, mainly to noble people. It was attributed to this art of facing one another civilizing features of violence that can be read with the filter of the theories of modern sociology, properly rooted in studies based on the Norbert Elias’ theories on the process of civilization that drove values and profoundly renewing historical transformations in western society since the end of medieval times.
