El mitologema clásico del viaje del héroe y su influencia en la cinematografía contemporánea

Abstract

RESUMEN El “mitologema” o “monomito” del viaje del héroe, presente en muchos ciclos mitológicos épicos de la Antigüedad clásica, ha sido estudiado e interpretado de forma sugestiva por el mitólogo Joseph Campbell (1904-1987), que logró individualizar en todos los relatos heroicos unas etapas claramente definidas y recurrentes, cada una de ellas con múltiples obstáculos y desafíos que el protagonista debe de superar para cumplir su destino. Este trabajo, que se enmarca en la asignatura “Pervivencia de la Mitología Clásica en Europa”, se propone estudiar las reinterpretaciones que, a raíz de los estudios de Campbell, se han hecho de este fascinante arquetipo clásico, centrándonos especialmente en cómo ha sido adaptado al cine contemporáneo. De hecho, algunas de las producciones más exitosas y conocidas de los géneros de fantasía o Ciencia Ficción protagonizadas por héroes (desde Perseo o Jasón y los Argonautas), hasta Star Wars, El Señor de los Anillos o Harry Potter se han construido según este esquema formalizado por Campbell a partir de los mitos clásicos, tan arraigados en el imaginario de nuestra cultura europea. Este TFM quiere hacer un recorrido entre esas producciones cinematográficas, partiendo de unas premisas iniciales sobre la figura del héroe y las etapas de su viaje, para mostrar cómo las películas seleccionadas contienen ese arquetipo, y reflejar que el cine puede servir como una forma de interiorización y divulgación del mito antiguo

ABSTRACT The "mythologema" or "monomyth" of the hero's journey, present in many epic mythological cycles of classical antiquity, has been studied and interpreted in a suggestive way by the mythologist Joseph Campbell (1904-1987). He was able to identify clearly defined and recurring stages in all heroic tales, each one of them with multiple obstacles and challenges that the protagonist must overcome to achieve his destiny. This work, which is part of the subject "The Preservation of Classical Mythology in Europe", aims to study the reinterpretations that, as a result of Campbell's studies, have been made of this fascinating classical archetype, focusing especially on how it has been adapted to contemporary cinema. In fact, some of the most successful and well-known productions in the fantasy or science fiction genres starring heroes (from Perseus or Jason and the Argonauts to Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter) have been built according to this scheme formalized by Campbell from the classical myths, so deeply rooted in the imaginary of our European culture. This TFM aims to make a tour of these film productions, starting from some initial premises on the figure of the hero and the cycles of his journey, to show how the selected films contain that archetype and reflect that cinema can serve as a form of internalization and dissemination of ancient myth
