Integración de las tribus norteafricanas en el imperio romano: el caso de los Musulamii

Abstract

RESUMEN: La expansión del Imperio romano a lo largo del norte de África se ha solido entender como un relato donde los romanos adquieren un papel protagonista, reduciendo a las tribus nativas a estereotipos con un rol prácticamente secundario. Sin embargo, gracias a la información que han aportado los nuevos hallazgos y los recientes cambios historiográficos se ha conseguido poner el foco ya no sólo en el Imperio, sino también en estas comunidades tribales. Este trabajo pretende ofrecer un contexto general de África del Norte y sus tribus, para así entender mejor las relaciones que se fueron conformando entre el Imperio y estos pueblos: desde aquellos que se integraron pacíficamente en las estructuras romanas, hasta aquellos que se rebelaron contra ellas. Además, se hace especial hincapié en la tribu de los Musulamii, cuyo transcurso histórico refleja perfectamente la complejidad y heterogeneidad del proceso romanizador en África.

ABSTRACT: The expansion of the Roman Empire throughout North Africa has tended to be understood as a story in which the Romans take on a leading role, reducing the native tribes to stereotypes with an almost secondary role. However, thanks to the information provided by the new findings and the recent historiographical changes, the focus has been placed not only on the Empire, but also on these tribal communities. This work aims to offer a general context of North Africa and its tribes, in order to better understand the relationships that were formed between the Empire and these peoples: from those who peacefully integrated into Roman structures, to those who rebelled against them. In addition, special emphasis is placed on the Musulamii tribe, whose historical course reflects perfectly the complexity and heterogeneity of the romanization process in Africa.
