La restauración de la Catedral de Santander (1942-1953)

Abstract

RESUMEN La Catedral de Santander es uno de los elementos patrimoniales más relevantes de la ciudad. Este edificio religioso sufrió graves daños como consecuencia de un incendio sucedido en 1941. Así, el objeto de estudio de este trabajo es analizar el proceso de restauración entre los años 1942 y 1953. De este modo, se detallará el plan de obras, los arquitectos que participaron y los resultados obtenidos. Además, para abordar estas cuestiones se incluirán unas consideraciones previas sobre las teorías de restauración definidas en el periodo contemporáneo, y el desarrollo de rehabilitaciones similares durante esas décadas en Europa y España. Todo ello permitirá evaluar y comprender la restauración de la Catedral de Santander. Asimismo, conocer sus orígenes e historia será determinante para destacar la necesidad de preservar este legado cultural. En cuanto a la elaboración del ensayo se emplearán principalmente obras bibliográficas de carácter científico, así como fuentes documentales entre las que se incluyen planos y fotografías procedentes de colecciones privadas y archivos.

ABSTRACT Santander Cathedral is one of the most relevant heritage elements of the city. This religious building suffered serious damage as a result of a fire that occurred in 1941. Thus, the object of study in this work is to analyze the restoration process between 1942 and 1953. In this way, the plan of works, the architects who participated and the results obtained. In addition, to address these issues, some preliminary considerations will be included on the restoration theories defined in the contemporary period, and the development of similar rehabilitations during those decades in Europe and Spain. All of this will make possible to evaluate and understand the restoration of Santander Cathedral. Also, knowing its origins and history will be decisive to highlight the need to preserve this cultural legacy. Regarding the preparation of the essay, bibliographical works of a scientific nature will be used mainly, as well as documentary sources, including plans and photographs from private collections and archives.
