El trofeo en época romana: victoria, poder y propaganda

Abstract

RESUMEN: La prolongada dominación de Roma sobre numerosos pueblos se apoyó en la difusión de símbolos. Uno de los más característicos, y a la vez menos estudiados, es el trofeo. Procedente de Grecia, se trataba en origen de un sencillo tronco vestido con las armas arrebatadas al enemigo vencido, como muestra espontánea de la victoria. Más tarde, pasó de efímero a permanente, adoptando la forma de monumentos, estatuas y relieves en piedra. Su significado se adaptó a los cambios históricos, llegando a convertirse en la imagen de la dominación durante la época de mayor expansión romana. Finalmente, el aparato propagandístico imperial utilizó su simbología para promocionar el nuevo régimen y cohesionar los vastos territorios bajo su dominio. El trofeo, por tanto, es un reflejo de la evolución social y política durante el largo tiempo en el que Roma fue la capital del mundo.

ABSTRACT: The long lasting domination of Rome was supported by the spread of many symbols. One of the most characteristic, and at the same time least studied, is the trophy. Originally from Greece, it was at first a simple wooden log dressed in weapons taken from the defeated enemy, as a spontaneous sign of victory. Later, it went from ephemeral to permanent, taking the form of monuments, statues and stone reliefs. Its meaning was adapted to the historical changes, becoming the image of domination during the time of greatest Roman expansion. Finally, the imperial propaganda apparatus used its symbology to promote the new regime and unite the vast territories under its rule. The trophy, therefore, is a reflection of the social and political evolution during the long time that Rome was the capital of the world.
