Resumen/Abstract
A theoretical formulation for the coupling of light between two multimode optical fibers is presented. It improves the traditional theory substantially, which supposes a constant luminous distribution in the core of the fiber and leads to wrong results. The experimental results obtained, basically the form of the spot of light and the optical power coupled for several fiber configurations and different misalignments, have been validated in the laboratory, and have shown great conformity with the theoretical ones. This theory has a large application, on the one hand, in the calculation of losses in multimode connectors with misalignments or when the fibers are different, and on the other, and above all, in the study of optical sensors based on the relative displacement of two optical fibers.
