La controvertida aprobación por la Food and Drug Administration (FDA) de aducanumab contra el Alzheimer

Abstract

RESUMEN : La Enfermedad de Alzheimer es un importante problema de salud mundial en nuestros tiempos. Con los años,se han ido desarrollando diferentes teorías acerca del origen etiológico de dicha enfermedad. En los últimos tiempos se ha ido investigando y avanzando en el ámbito de las posibilidades terapéuticas de estos pacientes. En la última década se ha avanzado mucho sobre este tema, desarrollándose nuevas terapias basadas en terapia inmune y un abordaje multidisplinar. Produciéndose el 7 junio de 2021 la aprobación por parte de la FDA (Food and Drug Administration) del fármaco “aducanumab”. Aducanumab es un anticuerpo monoclonal dirigido contra la acumulación de beta amiloide en el cerebro, cuyos resultandos podrían ser un efecto modificador en la progresión de la enfermedad de Alzheimer, convirtiéndose de este modo en el primer fármaco capaz de modificar la progresión de la enfermedad de Alzheimer. Esta aprobación únicamente se produjo por parte de la FDA, ya que la EMA (Agencia Europea del Medicamento) desestimó su aprobación. Como consecuencia de todo ello, la aprobación de este nuevo fármaco supuso una gran revolución mediática, en todos los sentidos.

ABSTRACT : Alzheimer's disease is a global health issue of our times. Over the years, different theories have been developed regarding the etiological origin of this disorder. In recent times, research has been carried out and further progress has been made in the therapeutic possibilities of the patients. In the last decade, a great deal of progress has been achieved in this area and there are new therapies based on immunotherapy and multidisciplinary approaches. On June 7, 2021, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved the drug “aducanumab”. Aducanumab is a monoclonal antibody directed against the accumulation of amyloid beta in the brain and the results could have a modifying effect on the progression of Alzheimer's disease. In such a way, it becomes the first drug capable of modifying the progression of Alzheimer. This approval only came from the FDA, since the EMA (European Medicines Agency) rejected it. Consequently, the approval of this new drug became a media revolution in every sense.
