Recherches sur les circuits commerciaux du nord de l'Espagne à la fin du Moyen Âge: l'exemple des «Quatre Villes de la Côte»

Abstract

RÉSUMÉ: Les quatre villes de Castro Urdiales, Laredo, Santander et San Vicente de la Barquera réalisaient à l'essentiel des activités liés à la mer (pêche et commerce) de la Cantabrie à la fin du Moyen Âge. Interfaces d'échange avec leur arrière-pays, elles servaient aussi de débouchés maritimes aux provinces du nord de la Castille situées de l'autre côté des monts cantabriques. Leur rôle dans la structuration de l'espace nord-péninsulaire était cependant amoindri par le rayonnement commercial Bilbao dont elles avaient du mal à échapper à l'influence économique.

ABSTRACT: The four towns of Castro Urdiales, Laredo, Santander and San Vicente de la Barquera carried out many of the sea-related activities (fishing and trade) of Cantabria in the late Middle Ages. Trade interfaces with the hinterlands, these towns were also maritime gateways to the northern provinces of Castile, located on the other side of the Cantabrian Mountains. Their role in structuring the Northern Iberian Peninsula, however, was lessened by the economic influence of Bilbao, from which they were struggling to escape.
