La comunidad china en Filipinas y la Protectoría de Sangleyes durante la Edad Moderna

Abstract

RESUMEN: Los Sangleyes, los comerciantes chinos establecidos en el centro de la pujante actividad comercial que fue la Manila moderna, fueron protagonistas clave para el funcionamiento y supervivencia de la presencia española en Asia durante tres siglos. Es por ello que, para asegurar su buen trato y que continuaran trayendo sus mercancías, la administración hispana estableció el cargo de protector de sangleyes. El presente trabajo analiza los orígenes y motivos de la fundación de esta protectoría, mostrando su evolución y las consecuencias del establecimiento de este oficio.

ABSTRACT: The Sangleys, the Chinese merchants established in the centre of the thriving commercial activity that war early modern Manila, were key to the functioning and survival of the Spanish presence in Asia for three centuries. That is why, to ensure their good treatment and that they continue to bring their wares, the Hispanic administration established the position of protector of Sangleys. The present work analyses the origins and reasons for the founding of this protectorate, showing its evolution and the consequences of the establishment of this job.
