La historia económica de las cajas de ahorros españolas : una perspectiva institucional y regional del ahorro, 1830-2004

Abstract

RESUMEN: En el artículo se analiza la importancia que reviste el estudio de la historia de las cajas de ahorros para poder comprender mejor la evolución del sistema financiero español. Se destaca la relevancia del papel desempeñado por las cajas como agentes del sistema, en el sentido de facilitar la incorporación de una importante masa de población a éste, evitando así su exclusión financiera. También se expone el importante papel jugado por estas entidades en el desarrollo de las regiones, especialmente a partir de la década de los setenta del siglo XX. Se destacan las aportaciones de los trabajos que se publican en este número de la revista siguiendo un hilo argumental lógico con la distribución de los trabajos y con el objetivo general de la publicación: mostrar la evolución de las cajas desde el siglo XIX hasta el año 2000, analizar su aportación al desarrollo de las regiones y analizar los procesos institucionales que les han permitido cobrar relevancia en el sistema financiero español.

ABSTRACT: In this article we analyse the importance of the study of the history of the savings banks in order to be able to achieve a better understanding of the development of the Spanish financial system. We single out the significant role played by the savings banks as agents of the system, in the sense of facilitating the incorporation of a large slice of population and thereby preventing their financial exclusion. We also describe the major part played by these institutions in regional development, especially from the nineteen seventies onwards. We underscore the contributions made by the articles published in this number of the journal, following a line of argument in keeping with the arrangement of the studies and the general aim of the publication: to show the evolution of the savings banks from the 19th to the 20th centuries, analyse their contribution to the development of the regions, and examine the institutional processes that have enabled them to play a major role in the Spanish financial system.
