En busca de un patrimonio olvidado: el movimiento por la humanización del parto

Abstract

RESUMEN: El parto y la maternidad se presentan como momentos determinantes en la vida de muchas mujeres. Sin embargo, los saberes, usos y costumbres que en torno a estos dos acontecimientos se desarrollaron durante siglos fueron cayendo en el olvido como resultado de una racionalización creciente del proceso. Sin embargo, la introducción de las prácticas médicas a mediados del siglo pasado, y la sustitución de los partos en casa por alumbramientos en hospitales, trajeron consigo el rechazo de buena parte de mujeres, durante la segunda ola feminista, a esta nueva modalidad de dar a luz. El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo principal analizar el Movimiento por la Humanización del Parto como un factor fundamental en el proceso de recuperación del Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial, de los saberes tradicionales, relativos al parto en el mundo occidental. Para ello, antes de abordar el objeto de estudio, se procederá a definir el concepto de maternidad, que nos permitirá alcanzar una mayor comprensión de dicho fenómeno. Asimismo, en un segundo bloque, se procederá a exponer las principales teorías antropológicas en torno al parto. Igualmente, se aportarán algunos ejemplos etnográficos que ilustren diferentes prácticas realizadas durante el proceso de parto en otras sociedades, de tal manera que nos permitan mostrar la riqueza cultural desarrollada en torno a este suceso. Finalmente, se analizará el Movimiento por la Humanización del Parto a través del estudio de las obras de sus principales teóricas: Adrienne Rich, Mary Daly y el Colectivo de Mujeres de Boston

ABSTRACT: Childbirth and motherhood are presented as a defining movement in the lives of many women. However, the knowledge, practices and customs which were developed over the centuries around these two events, were falling into oblivion because of an increasing rationalization of the process. So, the introduction of medical practices in the middle of the last century, and the substitution of home births for deliveries in hospitals, brought with them the rejection of many women, during the second feminist wave, of this new modality of giving birth. The main objective of this work is to analyze the Movement for the Humanization of Childbirth as a fundamental factor in the process of recovering the Intangible Cultural Heritage, a traditional knowledge related to childbirth in the Western world. For that purpose, before approaching the object of study, we will proceed to define the concept of motherhood, which allow us to achieve a greater understanding of this phenomenon. Likewise, in a second part, the main anthropological theories about childbirth will be presented. Furthermore, some ethnographic examples will be given that illustrate different practices carried out during the birth process in other societies, in such a way that they allow us to show the cultural richness developed around this event. Finally, the Movement for the Humanization of Childbirth will be analyzed through the study of the works of its main theorists: Adrienne Rich, Mary Daly, and the Boston Women´s Collective.
