La ciudad norteamericana en la ficción criminal contemporánea: George Pelecanos, Dennis Lehane, Richard Price y The Wire

Abstract

RESUMEN: La tesis aborda la representación de la ciudad norteamericana contemporánea en la ficción criminal en la obra de cuatro autores: George Pelecanos, Dennis Lehane, Richard Price y el responsable de la serie televisiva The Wire. David Simon. Su objetivo es demostrar que este género es uno de los más propicios para hacer legible la ciudad así como para mostrar los procesos de transformación que en ella se producen. Dividida en dos apartados, la tesis aborda en su primero, el marco teórico, la situación de las cuestiones espaciales en la crítica literaria y estudia en paralelo la evolución de la ciudad con el tratamiento de esta en la literatura. El segundo apartado está dedicado al análisis de la obra de cada uno de los autores mencionados, el cual nos confirma que este género nos revela con claridad los procesos de cambio por los que atraviesan las ciudades norteamericanas y que dichos procesos son trasladables a otras ciudades del mundo.

ABSTRACT: The dissertion analyzes the way the American city is represented in the crime fiction through the work of four authors: George Pelecanos, Dennis Lehane, Richard price and David Simon, the showrunner of HBO’s The Wire. The aim of the study is to demonstrate that crime fiction is one of the most suitable literary genres to make the contemporary city legible as well as to show the processes of transformation it undergoes. It approaches in its first part the situation of space in literary theory and examines the evolution of the city at the same time as its treatment in literature. The second part is devoted to analyze the fictions of the afore mentioned authors to prove the power of the genre in portraying the changes in the contemporary city and how these changes are similar to those in Western societies.
