Pandemia y crisis global en el S. II D.C.: diferentes interpretaciones sobre el alcance de la peste Antonina

Abstract

RESUMEN: La llamada “peste antonina”, que se extendió durante el mandato del emperador Marco Aurelio, ha sido considerada habitualmente como el inicio del fin del Imperio romano. Existen múltiples interpretaciones en las que se ha tendido a repetir afirmaciones sobre su intensidad, letalidad, extensión territorial… sin contar con una plena justificación. Ante esta situación, el estudio y comparación de las fuentes directas, junto con los resultados de nuevas técnicas de análisis de clima y contaminación, ha llevado a reformular diferentes teorías o hipótesis. Por este motivo es necesario tener en cuenta esta nueva información disponible para ir más allá en el conocimiento de la enfermedad, su alcance, así como sus efectos sobre la sociedad romana de la época.

ABSTRACT: The so-called "Antonine plague", which spread during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, has usually been considered as the beginning of the end of the Roman Empire. There are multiple interpretations in which there has been a tendency to repeat statements about its intensity, lethality, territorial extension... without full justification. Thereby, the study and comparison of direct sources together with the results of new climate and contamination analysis techniques, has led to the reformulation of different theories or hypotheses. For this reason it is necessary to consider this new information available to go further in the knowledge of the disease, its scope, as well as its effects on the Roman society of the second century.
