Los artesanos de la palabra: escribas en el antiguo Egipto

Abstract

El Antiguo Egipto representa una de las más importantes civilizaciones de la historia debido al amplio grado de desarrollo político, social y cultural que obtuvo a lo largo de los siglos. En dicho proceso la figura de los escribas tuvo un papel central como elemento esencial en el funcionamiento del Estado. Sin embargo, si por algo destacaron fue por su polivalencia y desempeño en otras áreas, como la religión o la literatura. El conocimiento que supieron aplicar para la materialización de la escritura les condujo a situarse entre las más altas esferas sociales, adquiriendo un gran valor por disponer de una herramienta que estaba al alcance de muy pocos. La consagración del oficio de escriba residió en su posición como transmisor de la comunicación escrita en todas sus variantes para con la sociedad de su propio tiempo, gracias a lo cual es posible disponer de un entendimiento mucho más acertado en la actualidad sobre el Egipto faraónico.

Ancient Egypt represents one of the most important civilizations in history due to the wide degree of political, social and cultural development that it obtained throughout the centuries. In this process the figure of the scribes played a central role as an essential element in the functioning of the State. However, if they stood out for something, it was because of their versatility and performance in other areas, such as religion or literature. The knowledge that they knew how to apply to the materialization of writing led them to place themselves among the highest social spheres, acquiring great value for having a tool that was available to very few. The consecration of the office of scribe resided in his position as transmitter of written communication in all its variants towards the society of his own time, thanks to which it is possible to have a much more accurate understanding today about Pharaonic Egypt.
